Supporting People with Dementia

Overview & Goals
D is 90 years old and lives alone. She has a diagnosis of Dementia and needs support due to poor memory and cognition. She also has Arthritis and a history of cardiovascular attacks.
She doesn’t have any formal care however nearby family are supportive. D has lost confidence and is at risk of falls at home and when out in the community. A TEC solution is required to protect her safety and independence, and to provide peace of mind for her family.
Process
Overview of steps taken
Step One
The assessment confirmed D could remain safe at home, by providing TEC that would detect falls whilst at home and out in the community.
Step Two
This would prevent the need for domiciliary care by enabling her to get help when needed if she had a fall or became unwell, with the family providing remote support when needed.
Step Three
An AnywhereCare Footprint with automatic falls detection was recommended, with access to the Anywhere Care portal provided to D’s family (with D’s consent). This allows her family to view her activity, set geofencing and locate her if she needs physical support. The family can also call the device to speak to D to provide reassurance and support.
Step Four
This monitored solution ensures alerts are immediately reviewed, backed by 24/7 support.
Solution and Outcomes
- D can now maintain her independence and be safe at home.
- D's family remotely monitor their mother, providing peace of mind as they can intervene when necessary.
- D can’t use a mobile phone, but this device enables her family to call D which is a real benefit. They can make sure she’s safe, attending appointments and knows where she has been when she goes out, which is very reassuring.
- The family have found having the Alarm Receiving Centre monitor the device means they don’t get false alerts and are only notified when there’s a real need.
- Without the TEC, D was expected to have a care package within 1 month, of between 4 and 10 hours of care per week for more than 6 months.
- Avoiding an increase in the care package equates to an avoided care cost of approximately £7,900 per annum.
